Works vs. Worth

It is critical to understand that what a coach thinks of a player as an athlete should not be what that player thinks of themselves as a person. Yet, one of the hardest things to do as a person - especially Americans - is to divide our works from our sense of self worth. When you close a sale, suddenly you are a good person. When you score points suddenly you are a good player. When you do the dishes for your wife suddenly you are a good husband. Now, while self worth and works are related, they’re not the same thing. And, since you are a human being prone to making mistakes, what happens to your mood when you miss the shot, mess up the dishes or perform poorly in your job? Your mood tanks too. It’s OK to get upset. You’re not a robot. But there is a difference between getting upset when something doesn’t work out and letting it ruin your entire day. Your works aren’t your worth.
